Phishing Just Got a Lot More Dangerous
For years, phishing emails were relatively easy to spot: poor grammar, suspicious sender addresses, generic greetings, urgent demands to "verify your account immediately." While unsophisticated attacks still exist, a new wave of AI-assisted phishing is making the old detection heuristics increasingly unreliable.
This isn't scaremongering — it's a shift in the threat landscape that individuals, businesses, and IT teams need to understand and respond to.
How Attackers Are Using AI
Hyper-Personalised Spear Phishing
Traditional phishing is a numbers game — send millions of generic emails and hope a small percentage click. Spear phishing is targeted: crafted for a specific person or organisation. AI has dramatically lowered the cost of doing this at scale.
By scraping publicly available data — LinkedIn profiles, company websites, social media, news articles — AI tools can generate personalised messages that reference your job title, recent projects, colleagues' names, and company-specific details. The result reads like a message from someone who knows you.
Voice Cloning and Vishing
AI voice synthesis tools can now clone a person's voice from a short audio sample. "Vishing" (voice phishing) attacks using cloned voices of executives, family members, or IT staff are an emerging and particularly effective vector. A call from what sounds exactly like your CEO asking you to process an urgent wire transfer is very hard to dismiss.
Deepfake Video in Business Email Compromise
Video deepfakes, while still computationally expensive, are increasingly used in high-value Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks. Video calls "from" a senior executive requesting sensitive information or financial actions have already been reported in corporate environments.
Why Traditional Filters Struggle
Email security tools traditionally look for:
- Known malicious domains and IP addresses
- Suspicious links and attachments
- Grammar and spelling errors
- Mismatched sender information
AI-generated phishing content is grammatically flawless, contextually appropriate, and often avoids links entirely — instead using social engineering to get targets to make calls, share information verbally, or initiate transactions. This makes signature-based filtering far less effective.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Organisation
For Individuals
- Slow down on urgent requests. Urgency is a manipulation tactic. Any request for money, credentials, or sensitive data — no matter how convincing — deserves a moment's pause.
- Verify through a separate channel. If your bank, a colleague, or a CEO asks for something sensitive, call them back on a number you already have — not one they've provided.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) everywhere. Even if credentials are stolen, MFA stops attackers from using them without a second factor.
- Be suspicious of unexpected context. A message that's unusually specific about your life or work could indicate data aggregation by an attacker.
For Organisations
- Implement DMARC, DKIM, and SPF to reduce email spoofing of your domain.
- Run regular, realistic phishing simulations — including AI-generated examples — so employees are tested against current-generation attacks, not last decade's threats.
- Establish a verbal verification protocol for high-value requests (financial transfers, credential resets) that requires a phone call to a known number.
- Adopt a Zero Trust security model, which assumes no request — internal or external — is automatically trustworthy.
The Bigger Picture
The same AI capabilities that make phishing attacks more convincing are also being applied to detection and defence. Next-generation security platforms use behavioural analysis, anomaly detection, and AI-assisted threat intelligence to catch attacks that signature-based tools miss.
But technology alone isn't the answer. The most effective layer of defence is a culture of healthy scepticism — people who know to pause, question, and verify before acting on any unexpected request, no matter how legitimate it appears.
